Sudoku: how to play

Sudoku is a number-placement puzzle on a 9×9 grid split into nine 3×3 boxes. Every Gamemur puzzle has a single solution, so logic is enough and guessing is never needed. Play the Daily puzzle, the same for everyone, or choose Easy, Medium or Hard. Progress is saved automatically.

Controls

Click or tap a square, then press a number on the pad below or type 1 to 9. Backspace, Delete or 0 clears a square, and the arrow keys move the selection. The Clear button does the same on touch screens.

Rules

  • Each row must contain 1 to 9 exactly once.
  • So must each column and each 3×3 box.
  • The starting numbers are fixed.
  • Wrong numbers turn red and count as a mistake.

Tips

  • Select a square: its row, column and box are highlighted, and every number visible there is ruled out.
  • Select a digit already on the grid; its copies light up, showing where the next one cannot go.
  • Look for a box where a number has only one possible home.
  • If two squares in a row accept only the same two numbers, remove them from the rest of the row.

Levels, mistakes and coins

Givens: 40 in Easy, 32 in Medium and the Daily puzzle, 26 in Hard. Finishing earns virtual coins: 50, 80 and 120 for Easy, Medium and Hard, and 100 for the Daily puzzle once per day (20 if you replay it). Coins have no monetary value and cannot be earned through ads. Your best time is kept.

Phone and keyboard

The squares and number pad are large touch targets, and each square has a row-and-column label for screen readers. The whole game works from the keyboard. Since mistakes are limited, check a placement before entering it.

Frequently asked questions

How many mistakes are allowed?

Easy 5, Medium 4, Hard 3 and the Daily puzzle 4. The counter reads, for example, Mistakes 2/5. When it runs out, the game ends.

Does correcting a wrong number remove the mistake?

No. Every wrong number counts once, even if you fix it afterwards.

When does the Daily puzzle change?

At midnight UTC.
