Parchís: how to play

Parchís is a Spanish race game for four players, a close cousin of ludo. In Gamemur you play the red pieces against green, yellow and blue, all driven by the computer.

Controls

Press the die button to roll. The pieces that can move are highlighted: click or tap the one you want, or reach it with Tab and press Enter or Space. If only one move exists, the game plays it for you after a short pause.

Rules

  • A piece leaves home only with a 5.
  • Landing on a rival piece captures it and sends it home, unless the square is safe; each colour's starting square is one of them.
  • A 6, a capture or reaching the goal gives another roll, but after a third six in a row you do not roll again.
  • A piece enters the goal only if the die does not carry it past the end.
  • The first colour with four pieces in the goal wins.

Tips

  • Before ending a move on an ordinary square, check the six squares behind it: any rival there can capture you with one roll.
  • Do not keep all pieces at home waiting for a 5; one piece on the track lets you use every roll.

How the rivals choose their moves

The computer scores every legal move. It favours leaving home, capturing, reaching the goal and landing on safe squares, and it avoids stopping within six squares in front of another colour, with a small random touch.

Coins and accessibility

Coins are virtual and cannot be exchanged for money. You earn the 5 per capture even if you lose the game. The die and movable pieces are real buttons, so they work with touch, mouse or keyboard.
