2048: how to play
2048 is a sliding-tile puzzle on a four-by-four board: merge equal numbers to build bigger ones and reach the 2048 tile. On Gamemur it runs in your browser in two modes, Free play and Daily challenge, and saves your game automatically.
Controls
On a computer, press the arrow keys to slide all tiles. On a phone or tablet, swipe across the board; swipes shorter than about 24 pixels are ignored, so a stray tap moves nothing. New game restarts the board.
Rules
- Each move slides every tile as far as it can go.
- Two equal tiles that collide merge into one of double value, which is added to your score.
- After a move that changes the board, a new tile appears in an empty cell: usually a 2, sometimes a 4.
- The game ends when the board is full and no neighbours match.
Tips
- Choose a corner and keep your biggest tile there; avoid the opposite direction unless you have no alternative.
- Use only three directions most of the time, so large numbers stay in a tidy row.
- Before each move, check whether it leaves a tile next to another of equal value.
Advanced strategy
Think in chains. If your corner holds 512 and the cells after it hold 256, 128 and 64 in descending order, one merge can cascade along the whole row. Build that gradient on purpose, and fix a small tile stranded behind a big one before adding more.
Modes, score and coins on Gamemur
Free play starts from a random board; the daily challenge uses the same board for everyone. Your score is the sum of all merges. When a game ends you get 1 virtual coin per 100 points, and reaching 2048 gives a one-off 300 virtual coins. They cannot be exchanged for money.

Can I keep playing after reaching 2048?
Yes. A message appears and you can carry on to raise your score.
What is the daily challenge?
Everyone gets the same starting board that day. When the online service is available, the official challenge is playable once per day and the server checks your moves.
Do coins have real value?
No. Gamemur coins are virtual, have no cash value and are not earned through ads.
