Memory: how to play

Memory is a pairs game: sixteen face-down cards hide eight pairs of symbols, and you must find every pair. The Gamemur version uses simple symbols such as a star, heart, sun and musical note, counts your attempts and remembers your lowest total.

Controls

Click or tap a card to flip it, then a second one. Each card is a button, so you can also move between them with Tab and flip with Enter or Space. If the two match, they stay face up. If not, they turn back after a short pause of under a second. The New game button reshuffles the cards.

Rules

  • Sixteen cards are shuffled and placed face down.
  • On each turn you flip two cards; this counts as one attempt.
  • Matching cards stay face up and cannot be flipped again.
  • The game ends when all eight pairs are found; fewer attempts is better.

Tips

  • Spend your first flips exploring different cards, so that you learn positions before you try to match.
  • When you see one half of a pair you already know, flip it first and then go for its partner.
  • Do not flip a known card just to check; a wasted attempt hurts your total.

Training visual memory

Divide the grid into quadrants and keep a mental map of each, updating it after every flip. Naming symbols quietly helps, as does linking a pair to a short image, such as the sun above the umbrella.

Attempts, goals and coins on Gamemur

The counter rises once per pair of flipped cards, not per card, and your record is the lowest total you have reached. Finishing gives 40 virtual coins, plus a 30-coin bonus at 12 attempts or fewer. Coins are virtual points, not money.

Frequently asked questions

What is the lowest possible number of attempts?

Eight, which would mean guessing every pair on the first try. Most games take more.

Can I use the keyboard?

The cards are standard buttons with labels, so Tab, Enter and Space work.

Do I earn coins?

Yes, 40 virtual coins for finishing, plus 30 more if you do it in 12 attempts or fewer. The coins have no cash value.
