Snake: how to play

Snake is the classic arcade game in which a growing line crosses a grid in search of food. In Gamemur it is played on a square 18×18 board with no sign-up. Each game starts with a three-segment snake heading right, and your best score is kept as your record.

Controls

On a computer, steer with the four arrow keys. On a touchscreen, swipe over the board in the direction you want to turn, or use the arrow buttons under it. Press Start to begin; the snake does not move until you do.

Rules

  • Eat the pink apple to grow one segment and score one point.
  • Hitting a wall ends the game.
  • Hitting your own body also ends it.
  • You cannot turn straight back on yourself.

Tips

  • Decide your next turn before the apple is in front of you.
  • Sweep the board in long, regular lanes so the free space stays in one piece.
  • Avoid tight spirals: they trap the head inside your own body.

Advanced strategy

As the snake grows, space becomes the real opponent. Travel along one edge and return along the next row, like mowing a lawn, so the free area stays a single block. Skip an apple for a moment if reaching it would seal off a region, and remember that the tail square frees up as you move.

How it works in Gamemur: apples and coins

The board has 324 squares and the game ticks every 120 milliseconds. The score is the number of apples eaten, and the reward is paid when the game ends, only if you ate at least one. On touchscreens the swipe works anywhere on the board.

Frequently asked questions

Does the snake speed up?

No. It moves at a constant pace of about eight squares per second; the difficulty comes from your length.

How many coins can I earn?

2 coins per apple when the game ends. They are virtual, have no monetary value and cannot be bought.

Is my record saved?

Yes, your best score is stored as your record.
