Daily Word: how to play
Daily Word, called Palabro in Spanish, hides one five-letter word per day. You get six tries, and after each one the letters are coloured to show how close you were. Everyone playing in the same language gets the same word on the same day. The English page uses an English dictionary and the Spanish page a Spanish one.
Controls
Type on your keyboard or tap the on-screen keys, then press Enter to submit. Backspace removes the last letter. The Spanish keyboard includes Ñ. On-screen keys take the colour of the best clue found for each letter.
Rules
- Guess a valid five-letter word within six tries.
- Green: the letter is in the word and in the right place.
- Yellow: the letter is in the word, in another place.
- Grey: no more copies of that letter in the word.
- A word not in the dictionary is rejected and costs no try.
Tips
- Open with common letters and different vowels so the first colours rule out many words.
- Keep green letters fixed and move yellow ones on the next try.
- With a doubled letter, one copy may be green and the other grey: the answer has only one.
- Check the keyboard colours before typing to avoid reusing grey letters.
Repeated letters and colours
Greens are assigned first. Each remaining letter turns yellow only while the answer still has an unmatched copy. If you type two Es and the answer has one, at most one E is coloured and the other is grey. That tells you exactly how many copies the answer contains.
Results and access
Your try count is recorded as your best result, and if you run out of tries the answer is shown. Progress for the day is saved in your browser. The game needs no dragging or holding, and works fully from the keyboard.
Frequently asked questions
When does the word change?
At midnight UTC. The board is titled with the number of the day's puzzle.
Do I earn coins?
Yes, virtual ones: 50 for solving it plus 10 per unused try, so solving on the first try pays 100. They have no monetary value.
Why was my word refused?
It needs exactly five letters and must be in the game's dictionary for that language.
